Project Description:

The Schmittentunnel in Zell am See, Salzburg, which was opened in 1996, is the longest state road tunnel in Austria with a length of approximately 5.100 metres. Due to changes in the requirements for the minimum safety level of road tunnels, the client, the provincial government of Salzburg, decided to construct additional escape and rescue routes.

On the Escape and Rescue Tunnel Schmittentunnel - North section construction lot, the Schmittentunnel Escape and Rescue Tunnel North will be built from the current Seehäusl Escape Tunnel.The construction is excluding the operating and safety equipment to be installed. The Escape and Rescue Tunnel will be connected to the main tunnel by 5 cross-passages, which will be alternately accessible to pedestrians and emergency services.

The total length of the Escape and Rescue Tunnel North is approximately 1.750 m and will be excavated with a standard profile of approximately 30 m2. The tunnel will be driven by drill and blast according to the principles of NATM; where necessary additional support will be installed by means of shotcrete inner lining.
