Project Description:

With the construction of the Wientalsammelkanal-Entlaster West, the City of Vienna wants to relieve the existing sewers and ensure water protection.

At the moment, the wastewater flows into the right and left sewers from the Wienfluss but during heavy rainfall these sewers reach their limit and the rainwater flows into the Wienfluss.

The Wiental Kanal will be constructed underground and for the most part along the left bank of the Wienfluss. The sewer will be constructed as a gravity sewer in a deep position and will be built as a closed tunnel with segmental lining with an internal diameter from 3.00 m. The 9 km long tunnel will be bored using a tunnel machine. From the starting shaft at Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel, the tunnel will be bored in 2 directions until the Ernst-Arnold-Park (5th district) and until the skatepark in Auhof (13th district). The collector sewers to the left and right of the Wienfluss will be connected to the new relief sewer via 39 existing overflow chambers. Furthermore, 4 additional connections will be made. The individual connections will be made underground with pipelines from the previously constructed tunnel.

The new Tunnel will relieve the sewer network during heavy rainfall and improve the water quality for the Wienfluss. In the event of extreme events, an emergency discharge into the Wienfluss via the outlets would still be possible.

The construction time for this technically and logistically interesting project is four years. The works for the Wientalsammelkanal-Entlaster West will start in 2024 and the commissioning is planned for 2028.
