Wiental Kanal to be extended by nine kilometers from Margareten to Hietzing - protection against pollution in heavy rain - completion by 2028.

On Thursday, 29.02.2024, Climate City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky, local councillor Angelika Pipal-Leixner and the district heads of Margareten, Mariahilf, Meidling, Hietzing, Penzing and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus symbolically handed over a miner's lamp to the Wien Kanal construction team. It was the starting signal for construction work on a project of the century: the Wiental Kanal is being extended by around nine kilometers under the Wienfluss. This is the largest canal construction project in the history of Wien Kanal.

ÖSTU-STETTIN is building an approximately 9 km long tunnel for the City of Vienna together with the consortium partner BeMo Tunnelling, mainly along the left bank of the Wienfluss, which will be connected to collector sewers to the right and left of the Wienfluss. This tunnel will relieve the sewer network during heavy rainfall and improve the water quality of the Wienfluss.

Work will start as early as March 4, 2024 on the Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel. This will be the center of construction activities for the next four years.
